Yester

The site's own footer states what it was for: “Yester is an experiment by Ed and Stef into how to learn about history. We encourage you to donate to Wikipedia, on whose shoulders we stand.”

A nightly rake task pulled that day's and the next day's entries from Wikipedia's “Selected anniversaries” pages, took the lead image from each article's infobox, tagged a subject by querying DBpedia (Conflict, Politics, Science, Royalty, Disasters, People…), and ran each headline through a clickbait method that strips the articles and copulas out to make it read like a modern news headline. The result was presented as today's front page — a masthead reading “Yester / Yesteryear's <today's date>”, headlines, sublines, an “In other olds” rail, per-story pages with share images, and an email subscribe form headed “Receive old news in your inbox”.
