This is a release on Type Records, the label I co-founded with John Xela. John was responsible for its musical output; I contributed in the first few years on design and running the label. The catalogue is archived here for posterity.
It is hard to believe that six years have gone by since Deaf Center's seminal 'Pale Ravine' LP hit the shelves. In contrast to Skodvin and Totland's previous work, 'Owl Splinters' was recorded in a studio setting (Nils Frahm's Durton studio, to be exact), and with the benefit of some high-end engineering and analogue equipment their murky compositions have been transformed from sketches into glorious widescreen spectacles. Between the more epic compositions, the two musicians give their own solo instruments time to breathe — Totland with the piano and Skodvin on the cello — and everything slots into place on the crushing centrepiece 'The Day I Would Never Have'.
