This is a release on Type Records, the label I co-founded with John Xela. John was responsible for its musical output; I contributed in the first few years on design and running the label. The catalogue is archived here for posterity.
Montreal's Mitchell Akiyama has been an active part of the music scene for some time as a solo artist and label boss, collaborating with Tony Boggs (as Désormais) and Jenna Robertson (as Avia Gardner), but this is the first time the three musicians have put their heads together to create something which absolutely defies their earlier work. With broken synthesizers, fizzled out drum machines and the usual armory of guitars and overdriven amplifiers they figured out a perfect pop formula, feeding the usual hooks and choruses through a mire of grimy effects to end up with something flickering and desperately neon coloured.
Sleazy no-wave pop produced with a noise aesthetic, bravely penetrating themes as diverse as sex, drugs, and the all important unicorn scene in Blade Runner.
